Job Purpose

Plan, organise, lead and control a safe and efficient mining operation to meet current and planned requirements of output, cost, maintenance and quality in accordance with the strategies, policies and objectives laid down by Saint Gobain Plc and Saint Gobain CPIL Ltd.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide Leadership to the mine team across safety, environment, maintenance, production and quality
  • Ensure mining operations are operated in accordance with Company and Statutory Mining & Quarry regulations, required safety standards and the provisions of Mining Leases/Licences.
  • Manage the controlled use of explosives, co-operating where necessary with the police for Underground blasting and with IIE for open pit and ensuring compliance with associated safety standards and Department of Justice regulations.
  • Manage the internal communications system (i.e. staff toolbox talks, daily, weekly and monthly departmental meetings) to ensure coherence amongst all staff
  • Design and implement methods for extracting gypsum, which ensure safe and economical operations in both use of people and machinery. Allocate resources, prepare shift schedules and assign tasks to achieve and exceed acceptable standards of productivity and plant efficiency.
  • Pursue the achievement of World-Class performance standards in safety and performance, through ensuring the delivery and optimization of the WCM Programme.
  • Prepare detailed analyses that contribute to the establishment of annual budgets for the mine.
  • Lay out development plans for future mine workings and conduct exploratory drilling programmes to identify adequate proven reserves and ensure term continuity of rock supplies. Liaise with Group Mineral Resources Division in calculating reserves and participate in the Mining Review Committee.
  • Assist in the design, development and opening of the existing quarry extension development project with both internal and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate and complete records and report weekly and monthly on mine performance, explaining deviations from budget, setting out remedial actions to address adverse variances.
  • Foster a constructive and harmonious climate of relationships with communities in the locality of the mine and deal with complaints from neighbours affected by mining operations. This may involve liaison with officials of the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources.
  • Represent the Company on relevant official mining and quarrying bodies.
  • Recruit, train, develop and motivate the workforce to ensure optimum performance and commitment to company objectives. Deal promptly with labour grievances in consultation with Human Resources, to foster a harmonious industrial relations climate.
